These items are obtained from the chests that spawn when the Sun Spirit is defeated in the Gold Dungeon. If you right-click with it in your hand, you will gain an extra heart. The maximum number of hearts is 20. Every time you die, you will lose a heart that a Life Shard gave you.

You can get Life Shards too from beating/complete the Elysian Dungeon.
